Personhood: Where’s the leadership? What’s the risk?

Personhood: Where’s the leadership? What’s the risk?

So I live in Iowa. Which means we have five seasons…the traditional four; spring, summer, winter, & fall, and a fifth that seems to go on pretty much year round; Political Season. It is inescapable and a burden that a lot of us gladly take on for the rest of the country…although I frequently thank God for creating the DVR, somewhere around the 12th day I think. We are knee deep in a particularly heavy part of the fifth season right now since we are just over a month from an election… and boy, is my DVR is getting a work out! But, I do try to watch the commercials at least once so I can run them through my crap filter, pardon my French, as we used to say. While doing this recently, I noticed a couple of ads that are discussing the issue that is near and dear to our heart…

In Central Iowa we are in the middle of two highly contested and closely watched races; the Third District race for the seat held by retiring congressman, Tom Latham and the once-in-a-lifetime opening of the senate seat held by, also retiring, Tom Harkin. One side of the aisle and their supporters have been especially noisy during these races. The Democrats and the PACs supporting them have been running a huge amount of ads. Though the PACs that are supporting the Republicans are starting to pop up as well, we really haven’t seen many from the GOP candidates themselves. Which, I guess, makes it easy to discuss the two ads that are talking about the issue of life and the way both sides are handling the issue.

Bruce Braley ran the first ad that I saw on this issue a few weeks ago…and he hammered his opponent, Joni Ernst! Calling her every name and throwing around all of the talking points you would expect…”radical” “wants to ban birth control” etc.

If you so desire, here is the ad:

Then there is this ad from Planned Parenthood:

Which is just all kinds of offensive!

There are people all over the state (and country, for that matter) chiming in to say how ridiculous these spots are…hey, I am! Though I have to admit, these ads make me want to vote for Joni more than any ad she’s put on the air since the primary!

This one was awesome!

I know Sen. Ernst’s record here in Iowa, which is pretty solid on life, and so does her opponent. So when I asked her to sign Personhood Iowa’s statement of wanting a Personhood Amendment to the Iowa Constitution at the recent Family Leader Summit in Ames, IA…especially since she is already on record as sponsoring another personhood bill in the Iowa Senate…WHY was Senator Ernst’s response…”I don’t want to get beat up on the campaign trail.” (I’ll wait while you go back and watch those first two ads…back? Good.) WHAT?! How is that working out Senator?

This goes to the point we make all of the time about leading with incremental steps on the political front; we are going to get blasted as “extreme” “fighting a war on women” etc. no matter what we lead with (ask Rep. Katrina Jackson, D-LA), so why not just go for what we say we really want? If that is what we really want…but, I digress. Why don’t these “leaders” in the, so-called, party of life just stand up and lead?! This is the first plank in the state party platform, I know, I helped write it. As we’ve already established, in Sen. Ernst’s case, she is already on record as supporting Personhood legislation. She had to know there was video out there. If she is truly pro-life, be proud!

Lt. Col. Ernst doesn’t come across as a shrinking violet and I know that the troops that have served under her command truly respect her. We have heard that she is “a soldier, a conservative, and a mom” and at many of the events I was at, a Christian. So it really makes no sense that she is letting them label her this way? I would expect Sen. Ernst to be taking this fight to them! Where is the candidate that was talking about cutting…uh, pork? I can only surmise that the consultant class has gotten a hold of both of these candidates, because, not be let off the hook, David Young isn’t saying anything either and his opponent is a blatant pro-killing candidate! We should not have to be wondering where these candidates stand or believe their opponents! They need to lead or get out of the way!
